Picked up a fine while driving a rental in Dubai? Here is exactly who pays, how to check, and how to avoid them in the first place.
Who pays traffic fines on a rental car?
You do. The car is registered to the rental company, so the fine reaches them first — then they pass it on to the driver who had the car at the time, sometimes with a small admin fee. Nothing disappears just because the car is not in your name.
How to check for fines in Dubai
You can check any time using the Dubai Police website or app, the RTA, or the MOI UAE app — usually by plate number or traffic file. It is worth checking before you hand the car back so there are no surprises. Salik tolls are billed separately from fines.
Common fines to avoid
Amounts are set by the authorities and change from time to time, but the usual ones are speeding (radars are everywhere — stay within the posted limit), running a red light, illegal parking (use paid Mawaqif zones), using your phone while driving, and not wearing a seatbelt. Speeding and red-light fines in particular can be steep.
Salik and fines are separate
Salik is a road toll, not a penalty — AED 4 each time you pass a gate. See our Salik guide for how it works on a rental.
Drive smart, pay nothing
Know the speed limits and rules for renters, carry the right licence, and you will almost certainly finish your rental fine-free. We keep everything transparent — any fine is passed on exactly as issued.
