Visiting Dubai and want to drive yourself? Good news: renting a car here as a tourist is straightforward, and in most cases you can drive on the licence you already hold. Here is exactly what you need, without the confusion.
Can I rent a car in Dubai with a foreign licence?
Yes. If you are a tourist in the UAE on a visit visa, you can rent and drive a car using a valid driving licence from your home country, as long as your country is on the list recognised by the authorities. That list includes the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, most of Europe, the GCC countries, and many more.
Do I need an International Driving Permit (IDP)?
An International Driving Permit is strongly recommended for tourists, and for some nationalities it is required alongside your home licence, especially if your licence is not printed in English or Arabic. It is inexpensive, quick to arrange in your home country before you travel, and it removes any doubt at pickup. If in doubt, bring one.
What about a US licence specifically?
A valid US driving licence is accepted for tourists renting in Dubai. Carrying an IDP alongside it is still a smart move, but American visitors regularly rent and drive here on their state licence with no issue.
What if I am a UAE resident?
Residents are different. Once you hold a UAE residence visa, you must drive on a valid UAE driving licence — a foreign licence is no longer accepted for residents. If you have recently moved, ask us and we will point you in the right direction.
What you need to bring
- Your valid driving licence (home-country licence for visitors, UAE licence for residents)
- An International Driving Permit if your licence is not in English or Arabic — recommended for all tourists
- Your passport with the entry stamp or visa, or your Emirates ID
- To be at least 21 years old; some luxury and sports cars require 25+
