The drive from Dubai to Oman — Musandam’s fjords, Muscat, or the beaches beyond — is one of the region’s great road trips. Can you do it in a rental car? Yes, with the right paperwork arranged in advance.
Yes — but arrange it first
You can take a rental car across the border, but you must have the rental company’s written permission and cross-border insurance before you travel. Driving out of the UAE without them will void your cover.
What you need
- A No Objection Certificate (NOC) / permission letter from the rental company
- An insurance extension for Oman (often called an “orange card”)
- Your passport, and an Oman visa if your nationality requires one
- A valid driving licence
The border crossing
Most travellers cross at Hatta (Al Wajajah) or Khatmat Milahah near the northern emirates. You clear UAE exit then Oman entry — keep all documents to hand and expect a short wait at busy times.
Which cars, and the cost
Cross-border trips are subject to approval and a small administrative fee; some car categories may be excluded. An SUV is the comfortable choice for the mountain roads of Musandam, an easy hop from Ras Al Khaimah.
