Doing something for the first time in a country you don’t know yet is always a little nerve-wracking, and renting a car is no exception. Will the paperwork be a headache? Are the roads intimidating? What if I get something wrong? Take a breath — this is one of the easiest places in the world to get behind the wheel, and this guide walks a complete beginner through it, step by step, with none of the jargon.

Step 1 — Work out what you actually need
Before anything else, picture your trip. How many people, how much luggage, how many days? Don’t over-buy. If it’s just you and a partner pottering around the city, an economy car is perfect and cheap. If it’s the whole family or you fancy a run into the desert, an SUV earns its keep. Getting this right first saves you money on both the rental and the fuel.
Step 2 — Sort your documents
- Residents: Emirates ID and a UAE licence.
- Tourists: passport, visa or entry stamp, and your own licence — plus an International Driving Permit if it isn’t in English or Arabic.
If you’re unsure whether your licence works, the visitor guide and the requirements page settle it quickly.
Step 3 — Understand the price before you say yes
Ask what’s included, and don’t be shy about it. Every rental comes with insurance — here’s how the cover and excess work — and most of our cars are no-deposit, so you won’t have a big hold sitting on your card. If you want a feel for what’s normal, the cost guide has the real ranges.
Step 4 — Book it, and let it come to you
This is the part that surprises people most. There’s no counter to find. You message us the car and the dates, and we deliver it — free — to your hotel, your flat, or the airport. If you’d like to see the whole flow first, it’s laid out in how to rent, step by step.
Five things I’d tell any first-timer about the roads
- Salik takes care of itself. Every car has a toll tag fitted — you just drive through the gates, AED 4 a time.
- Respect the cameras. Speed limits are enforced to the letter, so drive to the number on the sign and forget about them.
- The far-left lane is for overtaking only. Get past, then move back over.
- Parking is easy once you know it. Malls are free; busy districts use RTA paid zones you settle by app.
- Fuel is cheap and stations are everywhere — and an attendant fills it for you, so stay in your seat.
The questions every beginner asks
Is it hard to rent for the first time? Honestly, no. With your documents ready it takes minutes, and the car comes to you.
Do first-timers have to leave a deposit? On most of our cars, no — just message us to confirm.
Are the cars automatic? Yes, all of them — the UAE standard — so there’s nothing new to learn.
