Renting a car in Dubai and wondering about Salik? The good news: it is simpler than most visitors expect. Your rental already has everything it needs, and you will never queue at a toll booth — because there aren’t any. This guide explains exactly how Salik works on a rental car in 2026: the current rates, who pays, how you are charged, and a few easy ways to pay less.

What is Salik?

Salik (Arabic for “clear” or “open”) is Dubai’s automatic road-toll system. Instead of booths, each toll point has an overhead gantry that reads a small tag on your windscreen as you drive through at full speed. There is nothing to press and nowhere to stop. For the bigger picture on driving here — speed limits, fines and parking — see our complete guide to driving in Dubai for renters.

Do rental cars come with a Salik tag?

Yes. Every car we rent is already fitted with a registered, active Salik tag. You do not need to buy a tag, install an app, or top up an account yourself. Just get in and drive — the gates read the tag automatically wherever you go in Dubai.

Salik toll rates in 2026

Dubai now uses variable (peak / off-peak) pricing, so the amount per gate depends on the time of day:

Time Rate per gate
Peak — 6:00–10:00 AM & 4:00–8:00 PM (Mon–Sat) AED 6
Off-peak — 10:00 AM–4:00 PM & 8:00 PM–1:00 AM AED 4
Overnight — 1:00 AM–6:00 AM (daily) Free
Sunday — all day (free 1:00–6:00 AM) AED 4 flat

Handy rule: the paired gates — Al Safa North & South, and Al Mamzar North & South — count as a single charge if you pass both in the same direction within one hour.

Who pays Salik on a rental car — and how you’re charged

The driver using the car pays for the gates crossed during the rental. Because the tag is registered to the vehicle, every crossing is recorded automatically. At Al Rafaheia we keep this simple and transparent: any Salik tolls you use during your rental are added to your final invoice at the official Salik rate, clearly itemised — so there are no surprises and nothing for you to top up yourself. 5 easy ways to pay less on Salik

  1. Drive off-peak. The same gate costs AED 4 instead of AED 6 outside rush hours — and nothing at all between 1 and 6 AM.
  2. Use the one-hour paired-gate rule. Al Safa and Al Mamzar each count once if you pass both within an hour in the same direction.
  3. Plan your route. Google Maps and Waze show toll gates; a slightly different road can skip a gate you don’t need.
  4. Combine errands. Fewer separate trips across the same gate means fewer charges.
  5. Use the overnight window. Late-night airport runs between 1 and 6 AM are toll-free.

Where are the Salik gates?

Dubai now has more than ten Salik gates on its busiest routes. The main ones include Al Garhoud Bridge, Al Maktoum Bridge, the Airport Tunnel, Al Barsha (Sheikh Zayed Road), Al Safa North & South, Al Mamzar North & South, Jebel Ali, and the Business Bay Crossing. You’ll mostly meet them along Sheikh Zayed Road and the main creek crossings.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to buy or register a Salik tag for a rental?

No. The car already has an active tag — you simply drive.

Is Salik charged at night?

No. Crossings are free every night between 1:00 AM and 6:00 AM.

How much is Salik per gate?

AED 6 at peak times, AED 4 off-peak, and free overnight — per gate.

What if I drive to Abu Dhabi or Sharjah?

Salik only covers Dubai. Abu Dhabi uses a separate toll system (Darb) and Sharjah currently has no car toll. Planning that trip? See our Dubai to Abu Dhabi rental guide.

Will I see my Salik charges?

Yes — every crossing is itemised on your final invoice at the official rate.
